Is It the Right Time for a Fresh Start?

first_imgScientific American:Around this time of year, I tend to look back at the list of commitments I made in early January: I will exercise more often, spend more time with family, do a better job balancing my personal and professional lives, leave my laptop home when we go on vacation, and so on. And yet, only two months into the new year, I find I am not doing such a good job. And I am sure I am not alone. On January 1, people around the globe commit with vigor to all sorts of virtuous goals, from losing weight to being a more understanding boss or partner to eating more healthfully to saving more money. And, before too long, most of us find we’re back where we started.Setting virtuous goals at the beginning of the year can be quite effective, recent research tells us, since the first day of the year is a temporal landmark. Temporal landmarks signal the start of a new, distinct time period — making us feel we can start from a clean slate. They highlight a contrast between current and future goals (which are often different!) and can thus be a relatively simple way to motivate yourself to accomplish your virtuous goals. So, here is the good news: If you feel like you already failed on your resolutions like me, you do not need to wait till December 31 to start fresh. You simply need to identify a good temporal landmark, and give it another shot.Read the whole story: Scientific American More of our Members in the Media >last_img read more

Favorite “Bucks” unexpectedly suffer a loss against Orlando – Basketball –…

first_imgThe Milwaukee Bucks was the best team in the regular season in the league, while the Orlando Magic had a balance of 33-40 for the playoffs. Orlando won by 23 less than Milwaukee and in the fight against the team represented by the league’s MVP Janis Adetokunbo in the role of the latter, but it all had zero weight tonight, because it was Orlando who won.Orlando took the lead throughout the game, keeping ahead by about ten points. The Bucks were always expected to make a breakthrough and put things on the shelves, but Orlando knew how to dampen those breakthroughs in time and maintained at least a five-point lead throughout the last quarter, winning quite safely in the end (122: 110).“Magic” threw 16 long shots and almost perfectly executed free throws (18/19). Great game performed by Nikolas Vučevičs – he scored 35 points and 13 rebounds. Surprisingly, the Magic was also superior in terms of reservists’ contributions, as Derrill or DJ Augustine scored 11 points and 11 assists, while Terens Ross scored 18 points.Milwaukee’s level was held by Adetokunbo, who scored 31 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists, but also five errors and remarks. However, the Bucks lacked the lead of the other leaders (Middleton 14 points with 12 shots, Bledso collected 15 points), as well as made mistakes from the penalty line (missed ten out of 28 penalties). It is interesting to look back at last season’s “play-off” introduction, when “Magic” also unexpectedly won the first game of the series, doing so against the “Raptors”, but Toronto played, won 4-1 and later took the title.Round 1 of the NBA playoffsCoupleGame 1Game 2Game 3Game 4Game 5Game 6Game 7In the seriesEastern ConferenceBucks (1.) – Magic (8.)110:1220-1Raptors (2.) – Nets (7.)134:1101-0Celtics (3.) – 76ers (6.)109:1011-0Pacers (4.) – Heat (5.)Western ConferenceLakers (1.) – Trail Blazers (8.)Clippers (2.) – Mavericks (7.)118:1101-0Nuggets (3.) – Jazz (6.)135:125 P1-0Rockets (4.) – Thunder (5.)Resources used:The official site of the NBA | NBA.comlast_img read more
